The City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Board met early this week to approve city-sponsored youth league stipend requests. Among the funds approved was $2,000 requested by Minor Threat to set up a league equipment pool of skates and protective gear for beginning and interested skaters.
Minor Threat and the other recipients of city funds are volunteer-run, youth-oriented sports organizations which utilize City of Las Cruces facilities as practice and event space. Minor Threat’s relationship with the city dates to Marc 2011, when we received approval from the Parks and Recreation Department to utilize the Meerscheidt Rec Center roller hockey rink for practices and events. More recently, Minor Threat received approval to paint a roller derby track on the skating surface – the first permanent roller derby facility in the Borderland, as both area adult leagues currently use tracks which must be set up and torn down between uses. The new track was sponsored by NAI 1st Valley Property Management.
From the Las Cruces Sun-News article, “City Parks and Recreation Director Mark Johnston said each of those leagues or organizations is financially stable and are worthy of help from the city. He added each of them is youth-oriented and does not utilize a paid staff to run the leagues or organizations. “The money has to go directly back to the youth,” said Johnston, of the city funds that were awarded.”
